There are two ways to participate in OAC Regionals; you must either receive an automatic bid or apply for an at-large bid.
One way to receive an automatic bid, a team must win a league, tournament, or bracket that has at least 6 different high schools. This must be an initial bracketing (it cannot be an afternoon re-bracket).
Another way to receive an automatic bid is by finishing in the top 15% of the total field (including JV) of a tournament OR bracket rounded up to the nearest whole number. For example, a field of 16 teams would qualify 3 teams for regionals (2.4 rounds up to 3)
To receive an at-large bid, a team must submit a resume of their body of work to the OAC Committee for consideration. If the OAC Regionals field is not full (96 teams), the Committee will then review the at-large bids, and select those teams they fill are best suited to participate at Regionals based on the data provided until the field is full.

Each region will consist of up to 16 teams, and all regions will operate using the same double-elimination bracket (click here to see the bracket for all possible numbers of teams). The morning of Regionals, each team will be asked to simultaneously complete a written 50 question seeding round in 10 minutes. All 16 teams will be ranked from 1-16 based on their score out of 50, with ties being broken by the following methods:
The first tiebreaker will be based off of how many questions a team answered correctly in questions 46-50.
If still tied, questions 41-45 will be used.
If still tied, a coin flip will be used to determine the seed.
Those seeds will determine where teams go in the bracket. Even after being eliminated from the double elimination bracket, some teams will have additional placement games so that all teams will be guaranteed 5 rounds of game play. Any byes should be played so that data on team questions and alphabet round scores can be gathered
for all teams each round. At the conclusion of each regional, the top two teams (the champion and the runner-up) will advance to OAC State. All other teams will be eligible for one of the 4 wild card spots.
NEW FOR 2026!
OAC Division II (Small School)
Definition of “Division II” School
A public, nonselective school whose cumulative enrollment across grade levels 10-12 is 500 students or less;
A private school whose cumulative enrollment across grade levels 10-12 is 350 students or less;
For the intents of the above definitions, any “Charter” school that does not befit the norms (enrollment pattern, selectivity of admissions, charging of tuition) of being a high school for a conventional public school district will be eligible for Division II provided that their enrollment across grade levels 10-12 is 350 students or less. The Executive Director’s office reserves the right to adjudicate whether a Charter school, after all school composite information is provided, is eligible under the former <500 student (grades 10-12) threshold or the latter <350 student threshold on a case-by-case basis.
Qualification Model for State Tournament
There will be six (6) Automatic Qualifiers (AQ) bids to the Division II State Tournament. Each region will qualify one (1) Division II school to the Division II State Tournament. The number of Automatic Qualifiers will be equal to the number of OAC Regionals in a given academic year.
There will be two (2) At-Large (AL) bids to the Division II State Tournament. In the event there are less than six, or more than six, Regionals, the number of At-Large bids will be the difference between 8 and ‘N’ number of Regionals; e.g. if there are five (5) Regionals, there will be three (3) At-Large bids.
SELECTION PRIORITY OF AUTOMATIC QUALIFIER BIDS
If a Division II school wins their Regional, they will qualify for the Division II State Tournament by default. In such instances, the given Regional’s AQ bid will be satisfied.
The highest-placing Division II school in every regional will be awarded an AQ bid.
SELECTION PRIORITY OF AT-LARGE BIDS
If a given Regional’s final results has both a Division II school finishing as Regional Champion and a Division II school finishing as Regional Runner-Up, the Runner-Up for that Regional will be awarded the first AL bid (AL-1.)
If there are two Regionals both with Division II schools attaining Champion and Runner-Up finishes, the Runner-Ups from both regionals will satisfy the statewide AL bid threshold from which no more AL’s will be selected.
If there are three or more Regionals with Division II schools attaining Champion and Runner-Up finishes, the selection of the two AL bids to the State Tournament will be awarded to the Runner-Ups with the two best statistical values on the Wild Card (WC) formula criteria. The first-best WC criteria finisher across the Regional Runner-Up table finish statewide will be awarded AL-1. The second-best WC criteria finisher across the Regional Runner-Up table finish statewide will be awarded the second At-Large bid (AL-2.) The third-best, and henceforth, WC criteria finishers across the Regional Runner-Up table finish statewide will not be awarded bids regardless of if their WC criteria statistical value is ahead of an AQ from another Regional.
In years where the number of At-Large bids cannot be satisfied by default of Regional Runner-Up finish on the statewide regional table, the selection priority for AL bids will then move to best statistical values on the WC criteria. If there is only one AL bid to come from a Regional Runner-Up finish, there will only be one AL bid to be awarded on the basis of best statistical value on WC criteria. If there are no AL bids to come from a Regional Runner-Up finish, the two AL bids will be awarded to the first-best and second-best statistical values statewide on WC criteria.
State Tournament
The Division II State Tournament will follow the OAC’s official bracket for 8 teams. It will be ran concurrent to the Division I State Tournament.
ALL teams, Automatic Qualifiers and At-Large bids, will be seeded 1-8 on their statistical values on the Wild Card criteria. This practice mirrors the Division I State Tournament’s seeding procedure.
